Booting and Logging In

To boot a machine, make sure that it is not already booted.  Sometimes you will find a workstation in "power management" mode, with the monitor in a standby state (yellow LED).  If the monitor LED is green, then the screen is blank.  If the monitor LED is not lit at all, turn the monitor on.

To wake up a "sleeping" workstation (blinking green LED), just move the mouse or press the Shift key.  If the machine does not wake up in a few seconds (solid green LED and monitor activation), ask for help or use another machine.

Solaris 10 login screen

Otherwise, press the power button on the left side of the front panel.  Solaris will typically boot up in a couple of minutes, and you will see the login screen.

When you log in for the first time using your account information, make sure that you select the Java Desktop System (JDS) environment.  If you are already familiar with Linux, you will recognize JDS as a version of GNOME.

Also available is the "classic" Common Desktop Environment (CDE).  Both environments are also selectable from the Options menu on the login screen.
