To launch a terminal window, you can right-click on an empty area of the desktop. A context menu will pop up:
The terminal window will then appear, running bash, and you can enter UNIX commands:
The terminal window will show up in the window switching panel at the bottom centre of the screen, ...
... and in the workspace panel:
Like most GNOME applications, the look-and-feel of the terminal is customizable. Simply open up the "Edit" menu and choose "Current Profile":
The terminal profile editor window will appear. Switch through the tabs to modify terminal appearance and behaviour:
